If you’re experiencing any amount of hair loss, you know how devastating it can be as a woman. Most women correlate their hair health with their femininity and self-esteem, so when they start to experience hair loss, the result tends to be life-altering. Focal Point doesn’t want you to experience this or settle for wigs or hair transplants. We offer a unique approach to treating hair loss instead of just covering up the effects.

We approach each hair loss guest with a comprehensive methodology, obtaining a detailed medical history, performing an in-depth scalp examination using state-of-the art diagnostic tools and, if indicated, blood tests to detect any underlying imbalances or deficiencies that may be contributing to the hair loss problem. Utilizing these techniques we determine not only the cause of hair loss and the most effective treatment, but we can also detect the earliest signs of hair thinning before it becomes apparent to the human eye. Early detection is crucial, as all medical therapies are most effective if started in the earlier stages of hair loss.

Focal Point’s goal is to educate guests on the evolution of hair regeneration and treatment options available. Focal Point provides guests with different options and methods of hair regeneration that is not offered in the Phoenix metro. These options include head spa, microneedling, peptides, prescription based medication as well as PRP & Growth Factors.

Signs and Symptoms of Alopecia in Women

  1. Gradual thinning on the top and crown of head.

While men most commonly begin to show signs of a receding hairline, the effect of androgenetic alopecia is a little different for women. Female pattern baldness gradually thins hair located on top of the crown. This causes the part to slowly widen over time rather than losing hair in the frontal hairline like men.

  1. Hair follicles falling out more frequently.

You may be pulling out handfuls of hair when you wash it or run a comb through it. While this can be a symptom of female pattern baldness, stress also plays a large part in increased hair loss. It can be frightening losing a clump of hair, but always remember – the calmer you are about it, the better it is for your health and your hair. If you become worried or think you may have androgenetic alopecia, contact Focal Point Vitality to thoroughly understand all of your possible options.

  1. Noticeable sparse areas of the scalp.

You may notice that your hair doesn’t feel as thick as it once was. While it isn’t as common in women, androgenetic alopecia can still cause patchy and balding areas in females. If sudden or drastic hair loss occurs, we recommend consulting with a doctor. Drastic hair loss is usually a sign of a genetic hair loss condition. When treated in the earlier stages of hair loss, guests are able to regrow more hair in comparison to those treated at a later stage.

Non-Pattern Causes of Hair Loss in Women

In women more often than in men, hair loss may be due to conditions other than androgenetic alopecia. Some of the most common of these causes are:

Trichotillomania – compulsive hair pulling. Hair loss due to trichotillomania is typically patchy, as compulsive hair pullers tend to concentrate the pulling in selected areas. Hair loss due to this cause cannot be treated effectively until the psychological or emotional reasons for trichotillomania are effectively addressed.

Alopecia areata – a possibly autoimmune disorder that causes patchy hair loss that can range from diffuse thinning to extensive areas of baldness with “islands” of retained hair. Medical examination is necessary to establish a diagnosis.

Triangular alopecia – loss of hair in the temporal areas that sometimes begins in childhood. Hair loss may be complete, or a few fine, thin-diameter hairs may remain. The cause of triangular alopecia is not known, but the condition can be treated medically or surgically.

Scarring alopecia – hair loss due to scarring of the scalp area. Scarring alopecia typically involves the top of the scalp and occurs predominantly in women. The condition frequently occurs in African-American women and is believed to be associated with persistent tight braiding or “corn-rowing” of scalp hair. A form of scarring alopecia also may occur in post-menopausal women, associated with inflammation of hair follicles and subsequent scarring.

Telogen effluvium – a common type of hair loss caused when a large percentage of scalp hairs are shifted into “shedding” phase. The causes of telogen effluvium may be hormonal, nutritional, drug-associated, or stress-associated.

Loose-anagen syndrome – a condition occurring primarily in fair-haired persons in which scalp hair sits loosely in hair follicles and is easily extracted by combing or pulling. The condition may appear in childhood, and may improve as the person ages.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Hair Loss

If you are a woman with thinning or lost scalp hair, your first necessary step is to have the condition correctly diagnosed by a hair restoration specialist. After a diagnosis is made, the hair restoration specialist will recommend an approach to effective non-surgical approach if appropriate.

At Focal Point, we pride ourselves on our thorough diagnosis process to make sure the appropriate treatment is prescribed.

Microscopic Exam – Hair Shaft and Bulb

In addition to chemical damage resulting from color, perms, heat, and straighteners, we screen for inborn abnormalities of the hair shafts. These include bubbles in the central cortex, twisting of the shaft, constrictions along the shaft, and other unusual features. The bulb, or attachment of the hair shaft to the scalp, is also examined.

Hair Mass

Your hair will be categorized in terms of its caliber or diameter. A coarse hair is 80 microns, a normal hair 70 microns, and fine hair is 60 microns or less. The hair’s diameter determines its cross sectional area or mass. A person with 100,000 coarse hairs has about twice the amount of hair as someone with 100,000 fine hairs.

Trichometry, which measures hair mass, takes 10 minutes, and no hair cutting is required for its performance. The precision and accuracy of this method are superior to other methods available today. It detects the smallest changes in hair number or caliber and can be used to predict baldness years before it can be seen with the naked eye. It can also be used to diagnose hair loss in women and to track your response to the treatments we will prescribe.

results from hair regeneration treatment in scottsdaleThe Head Spa treatment is a great option for those who notice excessive hair loss and want a natural way to cleanse and detoxify the scalp.  This process does not aid in the process of restoring hair growth but protects the current hair follicles that are active.

Growth Factor treatments with Head Spa & Microneedling

The Growth Factor treatment using both the Head Spa and Microneedling focuses on transporting the nutrients to the follicle bulb by opening up the pores with steam technology or mechanical methods.  The growth factors are prepared with select, targeted growth factor proteins that are naturally present in healthy young hair follicles. This serum has been shown to help improve the overall condition of the scalp, rejuvenate damaged hair follicles, increase circulation, and encourage healthy hair growth.  It is enhanced by protective rare oil extracts, which may help maintain the health of lustrous, fuller hair.

Key ingredients in the growth factor serum are from the GF families FGF, GM-CSF, HGF, EGF, as well as selected others.

The growth factor treatment is a great option for those who are looking to repair hair regeneration in a less invasive manner.  There is no downtime in this treatment but must be done in a specific series based on the recommendation of the Hair Health Expert.

Follicle Nutrient Treatment using PRP w/Acell

Follicle Nutrient Treatment (FNT) at Focal Point with PRP w/Acell is a non-surgical solution to prevent additional hair loss and stimulate dormant hair follicles.

PRP w/Acell works at the cellular level to repair and remodel damaged tissues, including miniaturized hair follicles. PRP is full of one’s own growth factors that promote the rapid development of new blood vessels and improve follicular cell function.  Acell activates adult stem cells in the follicles, which are going dormant under the influence of hair loss genes.

When injected into the scalp, the combination causes miniaturized hair follicles to become healthier and larger, producing more robust hair growth.  The key to a successful treatment is a combination of upfront analysis of the hair follicle state, the ratio of PRP & Acell and the actual determination of injection sites.

Men and women over the age of 18 who are in the early stages of genetic hair loss benefit the most from Follicle Nutrient Treatments.  This treatment needs to be performed in a minimum of a series of 3 treatments at specific time intervals. The treatments are typically initial, 3 months, 6 months and before each treatment, a cleansing Head Spa treatment will be performed to ensure the scalp is detoxified before the treatment.

This treatment has been shown effective for both male and female pattern hair loss, regrown hair in alopecia areata, hypotrichosis of the eyebrows or beard, and other cases of nonhereditary hair loss.

Follicle Nutrient Treatment using Growth Factors

Hair RegenerationFollicle Nutrient Treatment using Growth Factors at Focal Point uses a proprietary method to “wake up” dormant cells in and around the hair follicles.  This action triggers the regeneration of hair. Growth Factors are protein molecules which are naturally produced by our bodies. Different growth factors do different things. Growth Factors function to regulate cell division and cell survival. The Follicle Nutrient Treatment program from Focal Point delivers amniotic growth factors to dormant hair cells and follicles.

Amniotic Growth Factors have the ability to self-renew or multiply, meaning they can repair and replace tissue in the human body. In other words, stem cells have the power to heal.  Growth Factors have the ability to build or reinforce the hair follicle papilla. This is essentially the base of the hair follicle bulb, which is comprised mainly of connective tissues and capillaries. Growth Factors prove to be very useful in the regeneration and repair of this hair follicle papilla.  Every receptor on a cell has its own unique shape that can only receive a specific Growth Factor-almost like a key fitting into a lock. Once a Growth Factor and a receptor join, an electrical signal is sent to the nucleus of the cell, which either creates new cells or changes existing cells.

Amniotic fluid is rich in the components that are believed to contribute to a wound healing response characterized by minimal inflammatory activity and regenerative rather than scar-mediated healing. These components work to kick-start the body’s own rejuvenation and healing process. Amniotic stem cells are donated stem cells and come from full-term live birth deliveries in a hospital setting. The materials do not come from an aborted fetus nor are they taken from the baby. These materials are donated by the birth mother to the hospital for continuing medical research and for the development of medical products to help others. No baby is harmed.

The process at Focal Point consists of 3 treatments at the frequency of initial, 6 months, 12 months.  Each treatment will include a detoxifying Head Spa, the Growth Factor injections and complimentary haircut/follow up between treatments.

Follicle Nutrient Treatment using Exosomes

Follicle Nutrient Treatment (FNT) with Exosomes is the newest treatment available at Focal Point.  Research into exosomes for hair restoration is a new development and scientific data is building. Publications regarding such only have surfaced in the past few years. Spring 2019 is when physicians and researchers largely concurred that the treatment type has major potential.  Even so, however, there is still plenty of research necessary. Such is a matter of comparing results, yes, but also finding the best way to manufacture and apply the said treatment.

The function of an exosome is to cross barriers and carry proteins through barriers too large for cells to cross. This better facilitates signaling and dispersal of nutrients and is responsible for the reinvigoration of follicles.  The size of an exosome is 30 – 200nm (hair strand is 80,000nm) and can only be seen with high powered scientific microscopes. This size is one of the keys to the effectiveness of the treatment and results.

Exosomes have been found to accelerate hair to return to the anlagen phase or growing phase.  Interestingly, the surrounding tissue can influence hair cells as well- fat surrounding hair tends to support hair growth.  Focal Point’s approach to utilize Exosomes to facilitate hair growth and attempt to reverse miniaturization of dormant hair by stimulating the dermal papilla cell (DPC) and the hair follicle stem cells (HFSC).
